La Vecchia Rama: an osteria with pizzeria among the vineyards of Negrar, in the heart of Valpolicella Classica

In San Peretto, on the first hills of Negrar, La Vecchia Rama opens its veranda onto the vine rows. In the kitchen, home-style Veronese recipes and meats from the grill; in the wood-fired oven, light-dough pizza; in the cellar, the best of Valpolicella, from Ripasso to Amarone. Verona is twenty minutes away, the Sacro Cuore hospital just a few minutes: here time slows to the pace of the vineyard.

Why come up to La Vecchia Rama

Four good reasons
to sit among the vineyards

Vineyard • Fire • Grill • Wine glass

Beneath a vineyard in Negrar lies a Roman villa with its mosaics; in the village's cellar, in 1936, Amarone was born. This has been wine country for two thousand years, and La Vecchia Rama is its osteria: a veranda over the vines, the fire of the wood oven and the flavours of home.

I.

A veranda over the vineyards

The veranda looks out over the vine rows and, in the warm season, you can also eat in the garden and in the outdoor lounge. Inside, spacious rooms among barrels and walls of wine; next to the restaurant, a large car park.

II.

Pizza from the wood-fired oven

A light dough, halfway between Neapolitan tradition and innovation, baked in the wood-fired oven even at lunchtime: the classic pizzas and the gourmet «al vertice del gusto» range, from the Rama to the pizza with figs and prosciutto.

III.

Veronese cooking and the grill

Gnocchi with pastissada de caval, Amarone risotto, artisan bigoli and boiled meats with pearà; and then tagliata, rib steak, Florentine T-bone and mixed grills.

IV.

The best of Valpolicella

Valpolicella, Ripasso and Amarone from the great wineries of the area, from Masi to Quintarelli, from Allegrini to Tedeschi and Tommasi: more than a hundred labels, many also by the glass.

The story of Negrar

Negrar di Valpolicella,
where wine is two thousand years old

Negrar is one of the hearts of Valpolicella Classica: hills of vines and cherry trees, Venetian villas and ancient hamlets, twelve kilometres from Verona. Every hamlet has its story; San Peretto's begins with a small Romanesque church on the hill.

  1. The villa beneath the vineyard

On the hills above Negrar stands a Roman villa with mosaic floors. The first traces surface in 1922; in 2020 the mosaics come back to light beneath a vineyard.

  2. The wine of Cassiodorus

Cassiodorus, minister of King Theodoric, praises the sweet wines of these hills, the favourites at the Gothic court: they are the ancestors of Recioto.

  3. San Peretto

On the hill, among the olive trees, rises the little Romanesque church of San Pietro, which people call San Peretto: it will give its name to the hamlet.

  4. From the Scaligeri to Venice

A free commune in the Middle Ages, Negrar passes to the Scaligeri and then to the Republic of Venice: villas, farm courtyards and walled orchards rise on the hills.

  5. The garden of Pojega

Count Antonio Rizzardi entrusts the architect Luigi Trezza with the garden of Pojega, with its green theatre among hedges and cypresses: still today one of the jewels of Valpolicella.

  6. Amarone is born

In the cellar of Negrar's wine cooperative, as tradition has it, the cellarman Adelino Lucchese tastes a forgotten barrel of Recioto: «This isn't bitter – it's an Amarone!».

  7. La Vecchia Rama

In San Peretto, an osteria with pizzeria among the vineyards. In the Venetian dialect a «rama» is a branch: like an old vine branch, deep roots and ever-new fruit.

From lunch to evening, seven days a week

A day
among the vineyards

At lunchtime there is the daily menu, pizza included: handy for those who work nearby or are visiting the hospital. In the evening the kitchen lights the grill and the wood-fired oven; on some evenings there is live music, and those looking for peace and quiet can ask for the quiet room. To finish, a homemade dessert and a glass of Recioto.
